Let’s Catch Up!

Well now, has it REALLY been 6 months since my last blog post? Boo!

The girls’ raced BMX most of the winter and spring at NW Indoor BMX, until they closed in early May for the outdoor season. Since then, we have done a handful of races at our local track (McCollum Park) and been to the Peninsula once.

In March, we attended the Dirty Poker Run put on by the Fringe Motorcycle Club. As always, it was a BLAST. This year, members from Maybelline’s 4H group attended – and she also got to work at one of the poker checkpoints (as part of her 4H Community Service requirements).

In April, Maybelline bought herself a new BMX bike – and gave her sister her old one. It was most definitely time for both of the girls to step a size up…love watching them improve as they grow!

Also in April, WE ADOPTED A PUPPY! For many years, the kiddos and Dan have been trying to convince me we need a dog. I was not sold on the idea! Eventually, when the right time/right situation came along, we jumped on it. On Easter Day, the ‘Easter Bunny’ delivered an adorable 10 week pure breed Mastiff puppy…we named her EB (short for Easter Bunny). We love and adore her SOOOOO MUCH!

We spent Memorial Day weekend over in tri-cities…racing Saturday morning at Walla Walla, Saturday evening at Columbia Basin, and Sunday morning at Columbia Basin. The girls’ swooped up podium finishes at all 3 of the races – and they sure went home as tired puppies. The weather that weekend was toppling in the 90’s…and of course, our AC in the #motohome had to go out in the middle of the trip – so that was quite the adventure. We are working on getting that fixed, as we speak!

Most of June was focused on wrapping up school and work, and preparing for the summer that lies ahead! In addition to graduation and birthday parties galore, we and trying to squeeze in some track time where fit.

Cycle Barns annual ‘Kids Day’ was in late June – and Poppa Wheelie and Maybelline volunteered for the event (and I somehow got coerced into working a few hours myself). It’s always fun to help get kiddos onto quads/dirt bikes/strider bikes for their first time…so many happy smiles!

Maybelline chose to have her birthday party at Poppa Wheelies again this year (I know, SHOCKING)! About 60 people attended, and we had as many as 15 kids riding the track throughout the day. In the early afternoon, we hosted a small ‘poker run’ ride for all the kids with some really great prizes/swag. Her birthday parties are always THE BEST – HAPPY 9th BIRTHDAY MAYHEM ♥.

It is now July (how the heck did that happen) – and the calendar is JAM PACKED with #moto #moto #moto through the rest of the summer. Both girls finish up swim lessons this week, and then we are off to Eastern Washington to ride with the 4H group for the weekend. Shortly after that, Mayhem is off to DIRT BIKE summer camp for an entire week. We have a big trip down to the Coos Bay sand dunes in August – immediately returning to 2 weeks out at the Evergreen State Fair (Mayhem will be competing on her dirt bike). We end the summer with BMX State Finals in Tri-Cities…than, back to school (and back to work for me).

Stay tuned for more adventures from Team #77 Racing!

Washington State BMX Finals!

Washington State BMX Finals…WHAT A WEEKEND!

Although we knew that this weekend was approaching for a long time, no one could prepare us for the chaos that led up to it! I am glad the weekend itself went well, and that we are almost done with ‘BMX season’.

The week/days prior to State Finals:

  • The kittens we are ‘fostering’ are growing and GROWING; they are finally eating solids and are close to going to their ‘forever’ homes…THANK GOODNESS! We struggled to find a ‘kitten/house sitter’ this past weekend (during finals), so we left a ton of food and water – and hoped for the best! Of course, they are still alive & well…and the girls’ are loving them more than ever.
  • Maybelline had hurt her back on the trampoline at Papa Wheelie’s the Sunday before; so along with x-rays and a 5 week treatment plan came a $150 bill, plus several more to come. Choosing to race over the weekend was kinda ‘sketchy’ – but she did great and seems to be recovering okay…we are sure hoping for the best.

IMAG2176[1]

  • We were responsible for feeding/watering the great-grand parents’ dogs while they were on a fishing trip. We had to corral a neighbor last-minute to feed them during finals…and they are NOT dog people (SORRY, THANK YOU, and WE LOVE YOU LINKUS FAMILY)…
  • Penelope had needed to get her immunizations updated and enrolled in kindergarten (YES, I AM THAT PARENT THAT WAITS UNTIL 2 WEEKS BEFORE SCHOOL TO ENROLL MY CHILD, YIKES!). She received her immunizations on Monday prior to the State Finals wknd. We are STILL working on getting her fully enrolled (lost her darn birth certificate)
  • Parking/Camping for the weekend: It wasn’t until a few weeks prior to State Finals that I found out that it was a 3 day event. By the time I had contacted the track for camping, they were already full. The TO (track operator) had put us on a wait list, and suggested a place or two that we could check out. And then when I called the surrounding RV resorts/comp grounds, every single place was full. The week of, my ‘favorite auntie’ Patch (thank you Auntie!) was able to secure us a place about 20 miles from the track – we were set to roll! But then…the TO pulled a miracle…and got us in at a farm just 2 driveways down from the racetrack – TRUE PARADISE!

IMAG2180[1]

  • Painter Dan: As you may or may not know, my husband Dan is a painter and has worked for and had ownership in his family’s painting company for several years now. Summer is THE painting season, and he has been as busy as ever. The week of finals, he had worked Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 6a-6p…getting as much done as he can. On Wednesday, I was notified that a previous client needed a rental interior done before Saturday. Knowing that we were leaving Friday morning for State Finals, Painter Dan got to work full force. He came home from work about 6pm on Wednesday for dinner, and left shortly following (stopping to do a bid in Everett on his way to Stanwood area). He worked until about 2am on Thursday, and came home for a few hours of sleep. 5 hours later, himself and 2 employees headed north to complete the interior job. 24 hours following that (yes, 24 hours of straight work), they returned home just in time for us to leave for State Finals! This meant I had to load and prep the ‘bus’ myself (first time ever); along with getting the household and kiddos prepared for 3 days away from home (not such a success, but I did alright). Poppa Wheelie drove the ‘bus’ over to the Peninsula while Painter Dan got a few hours of sleep, and I drove the truck over (so we would have extra wheels to go to/from the track, if needed).

And then, it was the weekend! As I mentioned above, we left for State Finals about noon-ish on Friday; Poppa Wheelie driving the ‘bus’ (with Penelope and Dan) and me driving our truck (with Maybelline). We had the option of taking the ferry or the Tacoma Narrows Bridge over to the Peninsula. With the ‘bus’ and the truck, the Ferry would have cost $170+ and who knows what wait times would have been on a Friday afternoon (typically 60+ minutes). We decided to head South thorough Tacoma, over the bridge, and up the Peninsula to Port Orchard! What should have been a 1 ½ hrs trip (normal traffic) was actually a 4 hour trip; we arrived at the track about 4pm.

Screenshot_2016-08-31-09-42-16[1]

Friday night was single point racing. Racing was to begin at 7:30, but didn’t start until closer to 8pm (which is usually their bed time). For both girls’, it was ‘total points’ racing (which means that they race all 3 motos and their finish/points for each moto are all added up to determine their total/final points). Both girls’ rode hard in all their races – both taking 3rd for the night! We didn’t end up getting to bed until close to midnight.

IMAG2177

Saturday’s racing didn’t roll around until 4pm. We slept in, and had a great breakfast/lunch back at camp; then headed in for some practice. Gates were packed, and both girls’ had to qualify for their mains. Nelly swooped up a 4th place win for the day, and May took 5th!

14054007_1212560792139905_5045504957737695534_n

Sunday was the State Finals! This normally wouldn’t sound like a ‘big deal’ to most people – but with over 2,000+ miles on the odometer and $6k+ from the pocket book this ‘BMX race season’, the girls were ‘in it to win it’  at this point. Maybelline was holding the #10 spot in the State for 8 year olds, and Penelope was also holding #10 spot in the State for 5 year olds. USA BMX awards ‘State Plates’ (the privilege of running  a green Washington State number plate with your qualifying number on it for one year) to the top 10 qualifying kids of each age. The girls’ were barely making the cut (currently standing at 10th both, and the final race determining their final spot) – so the State Finals were truly a ‘make it or break it’ type of moment.

Registration and practice started at 10am, and racing began shortly after noon. Most of our Diablos Team-mates made it out, YAY! Both girls’ were pumped and ready to race…improving as each practice lap went by. Both had full gates and were split into 2 motos and had to qualify for their mains (1st and 2nd place from each moto would advance to the main). Somehow, Penelope managed to shoot out of the gate in 1st place, and maintain it for the whole race! She placed first and was automatically was moving onto the main (so she didn’t have to race her 2nd moto). Maybelline struggled out of the gate, and held 4th/5th the entire race…and needed to try again (in her 2nd moto) to qualify for the main. Her 2nd moto, she took 2nd…advancing her to the main.

By the time mains rolled around, the indoor area was PACKED and everyone was ‘on edge’. Their ‘motos’ were only 3 races apart, so it seemed to fly by so fast! Nelly loaded onto the gate, launched out fairly quickly, and finshed 4th place. Maybelline also got a good start, but fell behind the pack going into the first corner. She also finished 4th! Thank goodness both final motos went well, but we still had NO IDEA where/if they finished in State Finals ‘top 10’ as far as points were concerned.

IMAG2184

We waited around for another 2+ hours for the ‘State Finals Award Ceremony’. We pulled up some chairs early on, but were quickly over came by crowds of people. When the 5N class was finally announced, Nelly was SHOCKED to hear her name (she was half asleep on my lap) – she finished 9th in the State for 5 year old kids – WOW! Shortly following, they announced the 8N class – and Maybelline was awarded 10th in the State for 8 year old kids! PRETTY AMAZING FEELING AS A PARENT – SOOOO PROUD OF MY GIRLS!

14138627_10209402795980465_8450036293196674039_o IMAG2196

After the awards, we headed back to the motorhome and cooked a quick dinner. We were on the road by 6pm, and home by 8pm (thankfully, traffic wasn’t bad at all). Wowha, glad that weekend is finally over!

Now, we are preparing for school (supplies, clothes, paperwork, etc. + me returning back to work) which starts one week from tomorrow. We have one last trip/vacation on the calendar before school starts to go see Auntie Chandra and Uncle Johnny in Nampa, Idaho. Although we are not exactly ready for another road trip, we sure are excited to spend some family time with those who mean the most! Here…we…go…

There is no place like HOME {even though we LOVE Spokane}!

We arrived home late last night, after 5 days over on the east side of the mountains in Spokane! Overall, it was a great trip. But as usual, it also came with a few minor hassles…

We left our home in Lynnwood about 1pm last Thursday (about 5 hours later than planned; last minute schedule change). We made sure we ate before we left (lunch date with girls’ bestie, Kenzie); as the late departure meant we were on a mission and making NO stops on the way over. Spokane is roughly a 5 hour drive from our house, so leaving at 1pm would put us at the track about 6pm…and racing started at 7pm that night. Cutting it soooo close!

IMAG2060[1]

About an hour into our drive (headed up I90 on Snoqualmie Pass), we blew out a right rear tire – DAMNIT! Luckily we do have dual tires in the rear, so we were able to ‘limp’ it (30mph on the pass, YOUR WELCOME FOLKS) to the nearest Les Schwab in North Bend. As soon as we pulled in, we got IMMEDIATE assistance (BEST customer service EVER). With luck on our side, they had 2 tires in stock – and had those both changed and us back on the road within an hour! We only actually blew out one tire, but within the last month – we had also already replaced 4 of the tires due to being ‘weather checked’. So leaving just one solo ‘old’ tire on the bus didn’t make sense, so we just replaced both. Now, the Team 77 #MotoHome has ALL NEW RUBBERS all around…(Cheers! But sooooo hard on the pocket book)…

IMAG2062

We got back on the road, another 2 hours behind schedule. At this point, we had recognized that it was very unlikely we wouldn’t make it in time for racing that night. We set off, slow and steady, SPOKANE bound!

Screenshot_2016-07-28-15-41-59[1]

It was 7:07pm when we hit the exit to the track, off I90. The track was still another 20ish mins from there – so we were too late. We cruised through town, stopped at a local Mexican Restaurant for dinner, and arrived at the track (racing was just finishing up) by 8ish. A track volunteer immediately flagged us down, and offered to let us park ANYWHERE (and this place was HUGE and empty). Being that it was pretty dark out already, we posted up not too far from the track, but away from regular ‘car’ parking – and got bikes and gear unloaded immediately. They opened the track back up, and ran a few hours of practice sessions under the lights. Great way to start the trip!

IMAG2066

Friday was also such a great day! Racing wasn’t until 6pm that day (thankfully, because it was HOT HOT HOT outside). The girls’ ran a few practice sessions on the track throughout the day, we went on a hike down to the river, and spent an hour or so at the ‘splash park’ next door. By 6pm, the girls’ were READY TO RACE (and Dan & I were exhausted from trying to keep them busy all day in the 95ish degree heat, LOL). The track operator, again, had told us to feel more than welcome to put our ‘team’ pop-up tent anywhere, YAY! We were able to snag a great spot on the finish line, under some shade, with a sweet picnic table.

For being a Friday night race, I was shocked at the turn out! Both girls had full gates; and they had 97 riders and 25 motos total. Fun way to spend Friday night ‘racing under the lights’

FB_IMG_1469940699779

Penelope finished 3rd overall, and Maybelline finished 5th. Even better was a surprise visit from Dan’s great aunt and uncle who live in Spokane. This was the first time they have ever seen the girls’ race, and they REALLY enjoyed it. Was fun to chat with them =).

IMAG2071

Saturday was the ‘BIG’ Triple Point Race that we initially came over for. Not only did the BMX track bring in 53 Motos and 229 riders; but there was also a HUGE volleyball tournament right next door that brought in THOUSANDS of people. That made for some interesting camping! We woke up to being blocked in from every angle by cars, trucks, travel trailers, and motorhomes. There were people ‘tail-gating’ everywhere, and music blaring from every stereo around. Luckily, by 7pm (just a few hours after racing was over), the place emptied out.

IMAG2076

Saturday’s race started at noon-ish. Both girls’ had FULL classes, and had to qualify for their mains. Nelly got 3rd in here first moto, so she was automatically transferring to the main. Mayhem got 5th, so needed to try again to qualify in the 2nd moto. Sure enough, she took 3rd in the 2nd moto – and moved on to the main.

Both girls’ rode so hard in their mains; peddling their butts off! May ended up taking 3rd overall, and Nelly took 4th. So proud of these girls!

IMAG2079

Sunday morning’s race (a double point race) came around pretty quickly (10am-ish). The track brought in 26 motos and 98 riders! For both girls’, it was a total point race (meaning they automatically go to the main; they don’t have to qualify for it). They, once again, peddled their butts off the entire time – and Nelly took 2nd, and May 3rd.

IMAG2080[1]

We also had another surprise visit, but this time from MY great Aunt & Uncle. They, too, had never seen the girls’ race. Was such a pleasure to visit with them!

This was the last race of the trip, so after racing, we packed things up – and got headed to our next destination…

Spokane RV Resort (at Deer Park Golf Club)!

spokane-rv-resort-map-2014

We arrived to the RV Resort on Sunday afternoon. Prior to this, I had procrastinated in making reservations for this ‘R&R time’ in Spokane after racing. By the time I got around to doing so, most of the ‘legit’ places were full/booked. Deer Park had an opening though, and was only 20mins from the track. So we booked it! Having looked over their website, and reading some reviews – I knew that this full service ‘luxury’ resort would work out great. They offered a pool, on-site laundry, club house, golfing, paved roads (for bikes or skateboards), playground, and restaurant – and had great views onto a beautifully landscaped golf course!

IMAG2092

We spent two days at the resort, departing on Tuesday. We got another surprise Tuesday morning: our good friend Brett brought his son and nephew out for the girls’ to play with. The four of them played kick ball, raced each other around, and had such a blast. Thank god for awesome friends!

We were on the road by noon-ish on Thursday, headed home. As soon as we jumped on I90, it was apparent that wind was going to be an issue, but we had NO IDEA how bad it was going to be. We traveled 45ish MPH almost the entire way home, being blown all over the road…sooooo scary (and I am the WORSE ‘back-seat driver’). As we went through Moses Lake, you could barely see the highway as a gnarly dust storm was rolling through. As we were heading down Vantage, the high winds busted off a mount on our awning, and sent the thing flying off the side of our motorhome. We pulled over, and up behind us came gentlemen who just lost his awning too. In front of us, were another gentleman and his son that ALSO just lost their awning. How bizarre is that? Anyhow, everyone helped everyone – and within a half hour or so, we were all back on the road.

We stopped in Ellensburg to check out Webb Powersports (KTM dealer) and have dinner. By the time we left Ellensburg, the winds had died down a bit. We were able to pick up speed near Cle Elum, and booked it over the pass. Coming into North Bend, a lady about 10 cars up lost control of her car, shooting her from one side of the highway, back to the other side, and up a bank off the shoulder. Of course, that caused all 4 lanes of traffic to lock up their brakes and start swerving to avoid her…which meant us bobbing & weaving while skidding to a quick stop. We pulled over for a few minutes, as both Dan and I were shaking and still trying to take in what just happened (both girls’ were sleeping through this thankfully). Dan went to check on the gal who wrecked her call, and called 911. After a short while, we jumped back on the highway and made for home. We were home by 8, showered and fed by 9, and in bed by 10 – what a crazy day of travel!

The kids and I are spending today and tomorrow getting the bus cleaned out and everything put away. Dan is back to work. Poppa Wheelie will be coming down on Friday and Saturday – as the girls’ are going to be racing the combined State Qualifier and DK Gold Cup Qualifier this weekend at SeaTac BMX. Luckily, this track is only 30ish minutes from home – so we will be making a ‘day trip’ out of it. Following that race, we will be ‘off’ from BMX for 2 weeks – as we head to Chinook for our annual fishing trip with Dan’s grandfather (our FAVORITE vacation of the year)!

adventure quotes (11)

I want to take a moment to give credit, where credit is due: A HUGE THANK YOU AND KUDOS to the team out at Spokane BMX! We have been to 7 tracks here in the NW this year, and Spokane BMX was BY FAR was the BEST venue, with the BEST people, and the BEST ‘program’. From the time we got there, to the time we left (4 days’ worth) – there was ALWAYS someone available for questions or to help. They kept their track open to the ‘public’ 24/7 – meaning we could practice anytime we wanted. Registration, practice, the posting of motos (and the 5 minutes given to dispute changes), the intervals between races…EVERYTHING was always right on time (meaning no waiting around/dead time). In the 3 days of racing, not once was there a ‘moto re-post’ (which is next to un-heard of; they seriously had their program together). The awards/trophies for each day were all different, and well thought out…we LOVED the plaques from the SCR! The facilities were kept SO CLEAN – and had ample parking and areas for camping. The track operator (who I believe was also the announcer) was always VERY CLEAR on details (personally introduced the ‘official’ for the day, gave credit to each volunteer individually, and had a GREAT sense of humor). During break time, they brought out hula hoops and other toys and let the kids put on a great show; so fun! Their photographer was TOP NOTCH – best photos of the girls’ yet, and they were usually posted/shared the SAME DAY! I could keep going on & on; but I am sure you get the general gist: SPOKANE BMX ROCKS! Too bad this track isn’t closer to home =(. We can’t wait to go back! Side note: Rumor has it, concrete corners go in this week – WOW!

Ready, set, GO {to Spokane}…

As we begin to recover from the chaos at Saturdays’ race – we prepare for another adventure for BMX racing. We are taking our motorhome (usually referred to as the ‘bus’) over to Spokane, ‘dry camping’ and racing 4 days in a row at their local BMX Track. We will then leave the track, and spend a few days of enjoying some R&R at a RV Resort and Country Club before heading back home.

In order to make this journey happen, we have had some serious chores to get done! We have been storing the bus over at the grandparents’ house. Yesterday, Painter Dan picked it up and brought it home. We’ve since then, we got 2 more new tires on it (in addition to the two new ones we got over ‘Nationals’ wknd), cleaned and washed it inside & out, filled the propane, emptied the tanks at a local rest stop, filled the bus with diesel and the generator with unleaded, filled the water tanks, got a few little repairs/fixes done, and now I just have to re-pack it! We are sooooo close; I can taste it 😉

IMG_20160727_185641842_HDR IMG_20160727_185656115_HDR IMG_20160727_185716411_HDR

Now, I’ve just got to get caught up on laundry, and get everyone packed! Although this may seem be a daunting task, we are fortunate enough to have a ‘clothes room’/XXL walk-in closet in our home that I sort EVERYONE’S clothes in when they come out of the dryer – making packing fairly easy. Riding gear (jerseys and track pants) are in one section, summer clothing in another – and shoes are sorted by season. This shouldn’t take too long; in fact, it will likely take longer to pack it and get it out to the motorhome than it will to find and select the items.

IMAG2055[1]

And food…now that the fridge is ‘on’ in the bus – I will get grocery shopping and food prep done here soon. I hate loading food from the grocery store, into the house, and then back into the bus (it just seems like too much unnecessary shuffling) – so I try to avoid it at all costs. Sometimes we will even plan our grocery shopping to be at the start of the trip, and just load from the grocery store right into the bus. Anyhow, I plan to boil a carton of eggs, make ‘protein balls’, prepare some raw veggies and salads, make some meat & cheese trays, etc. ahead of time – to make sure healthy snacks are just a reach away!

The lists go on and on. But I am feeling accomplished – we are soooooo close to being READY! Onward & upward. The count-down in on until we hit the open road!

BMX LumberJack Nationals: Day #1

2016-LUMBERJACK__1__mxw460_mxha.pdfWe made it! Although it’s only a 1.5hr drive from home, it seems as if it took DAYS to get here.

Once we arrived, we pulled into our weekend camping spot, and immediately blew out a tire. Ugh! Motorhome tires are NOT cheap, nor is it easy to get it replaced. We have a service call into the local Les Schwab and are hoping they will make it out first thing in the morning (before this place becomes a mad-house).

Less than 10 minutes following that episode, I stepped on a large piece of glass (hiding in the gravel) that went right through my shoe and sliced the bottom of my foot open. Double damn (as great-grandma would say)!

Getting the bad stuff out of the way first thing…the rest of the day hanging with our team mates has been a pleasure. The girls spent most of the afternoon running around, playing, and causing mischief whenever possible.

To celebrate Mayhem’s ACTUAL birthday (and Dan & I’s anniversary), we headed into town for dinner at Hop Jack’s. It was good, but nothing worth bragging about.

Now, we are bundled up in the motorhome watching ‘Parent Trap’ – hoping the kids will wind down and get well rested. Practice starts about 10 tomorrow, with racing immediately following. Can’t wait…!

Stay tuned for more updates from the BMX LumberJack Nationals…

Maybelline’s 8th Birthday SURPRISE!

13335776_1148762575186394_1740284389554125630_n

Today was Maybelline’s 8th birthday party! And as usual, she chose to have it at Poppa Wheelie’s house. About 40 or so WONDERFUL people showed up to ride (quads, dirt bikes, 3-wheelers, ORV’s, and horses too), BBQ, have root beer floats, and wish the growing sprout a HAPPY BIRFFFDAY…

And – the icing on the cake: she got a KTM Pro Senior 50 dirt bike! She has long wished for and awaited this bike (especially since taking the championship at NW Flat Track and outgrowing her current CRF 50). She has been working with her dad painting, pulling wagons at the Monroe Swap Meet, and taking on many other tasks in order to save for it (and just breached $200). Prior to our Silverwood trip, we found this KTM bike in Bend, Oregon – and Poppa Wheelie set off early on a 16 hour road trip to buy it. We had to keep it hid for the 4 days of vacation, as well as at Poppa’s house so it would be a surprise. And boy, was it a SURPRISE!

We are beyond blessed for all of our family and friends! Her new bike was funded by her biggest sponsors: Mom&Dad, Poppa Wheelie, Auntie Rockie, and Gma Susie. Her awesome aunt/uncle got her a matching KTM helmet, and her best buddy EZ&family got her a super sweet KTM zip up hoddie. Wild Bill&Ty knocked it out of the park with red Vans BMX shoes, and many lovely people stocked up her scrapbooking supplies. Gosh, (I know we are all saying this about now)… I wish I was her when I was younger! She truly deserves it.

13528319_10153806299413940_5242593971257309105_o

Now as we prepare to wrap up the birthday shenanigans; we shall turn about-face, and start preparing/packing for the LumberJack BMX Nationals this next weekend. Both girls will be racing this 3 day event, as we camp out in our motorhome at the track. Stay tuned for updates!
